How Long Do Canadians Actually Have to Wait for Healthcare?
It’s no surprise that over the years, wait times for healthcare services have continuously increased. With hospitals facing shortages in both beds and doctors, you can be hard-pressed now-a-days to receive medical treatment in Canada without sitting on a waitlist for months. Everyone hears horror stories about their friends or family waiting months, or even years, to receive treatment, but how long do Canadians really have to wait in order to receive healthcare treatment?
According to an article on The Daily Beast, a new study by Canada’s Fraser Institute suggests that the average Canadian can now expect to wait 9.5 weeks for treatment from a medical specialist. The article also states that these surgical waitlists are costing the nation around $1 billion every year in lost productivity. The article then goes on to inform the reader that based on a 2011 Statistics Canada finding an estimated 11 percent of patients “were adversely affected by their wait for non-emergency surgery.”
