Too much sugar

They’re packaged in bright, cartoonish boxes to attract children’s eyes, while their sugar content attracts their taste buds.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but when children consume cereals containing massive amounts of sugars, their health could be at risk.

A recent report by the U.S. based Environmental Working Group cautioned parents that some major breakfast cereals contain as much or more sugar per one cup serving as desserts.

Although this report was just released in December, the news is old. Any person who has consumed some of those cereals knows the sugar content is enough to send anybody on their day with a sugar high.

“For ideal nutrition, choose a cereal that has whole-grain flour as the first ingredient, and contains less than four grams of sugar and at least five grams of fibre per serving,” said Vancouver based dietitian Gloria Tsang, author of the myth-busting diet book Go UnDiet.

The slick marketing campaigns won’t stop, so it’s up to parents to limit their child’s interest in sugary cereals. As child obesity grows at a staggering pace, it’s time to prevent this epidemic one spoonful at a time.
